Course description From a critical perspective the course examines the place of architectural design theory within this age of rapid technological change. The course picks up on critical discourses that seek to challenge and unsettle various theorectical and technological certainties, critically examining issues of power, the philosophy of technology, the politics of domination, the production of space, history as disjunction, gender issues, discourses of the unconscious, cyberspace, theories of interpretation, and deconstruction - all of which implicate architectural design.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- To demonstrate how architecture fits within wider intellectual discourses, showing what is at stake in those discourses.
- To develop skills in critical scholarship and writing.
- To promote and excite self-directed study.
- Students will be able to engage in critical discussion and writing around the issues of architectural design theory.
- Knowledge of the histories and theories of architecture and urban design, the history of ideas, and the related disciplines of art, cultural studies and landscape studies and their use in informing the design process
- To gain visual, verbal and written communication skills using appropriate media to clearly and effectively convey and critically appraise design ideas and proposals.
