Course description |
The course will focus mainly on events and issues in modern Japan (mid-19th century to the present day). A generally thematic approach will be adopted and topics pertinent to the history and culture of modern Japanese will be examined. There will also be scope for studying topics from pre-modern Japan. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to deepen students' understanding of issues in Japanese history and civilization and to develop further their skills in use of library resources, synthesis of materials, oral presentation and discussion on prescribed themes and academic writing. |
Assessment Information
Two 3,500-word essays each worth 20% (total 40%)
One 3-hour degree examination 60%
Students will also be required to present tutorial papers regularly. |
