Course description |
This course aims to provide students with a broad understanding of economic and financial issues in emerging markets. The course is designed for a general audience and no prior exposure to economics or finance is assumed. Topics covered include economic and financial crashes and crises such as banking failures or exchange rate collapses; international contagion effects; financial market volatility; financial liberalisation; globalisation and foreign trade; economic development; foreign direct investment, portfolio investment and capital flows; development finance; corruption and governance; and human capital development. There is no text book for the course. The lectures are based on reading material derived from articles and reports from such journals as the IMF Staff Papers, World Bank Economic Review, Emerging Markets Review, Emerging Markets Quarterly, Journal of Emerging Market Finance, Journal of Emerging Market Finance and Trade, and Developing Economies. |

Course Delivery Information
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will develop an understanding of the practical issues of economics and finance with special reference to emerging markets. They will also develop an ability to better follow the financial press. |
Assessment Information
Assessment in this course will be based on three components:
1.One 4000-word essay, to be assigned toward the beginning of the course, worth 70%.
2.PowerPoint presentation of the aforementioned essay, to occur during the second half of the course, worth 20%.
3.Active participation in discussions of student presentations, worth 10%.
