Course description The course begins with an introduction to the basic grammar and syntax of Early Irish, and proceeds to study Early Irish texts with a continuing emphasis on language

Pre-requisites Co-requisites Students MUST also take: Early Irish Texts 2 (CELT10010)
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements Students may substitute CELT08017 Introduction to Gaelic Language and Culture for EITHER CELT08014 Celtic Civilisation 1A or CELT08015 Celtic Civilisation 1B.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The teaching programme consists of two complementary strands, introducing students to the pronunciation, grammar and syntax of Early Irish, and training them to read edited Early Irish texts. It provides students with an introduction to the palaeographic, orthographic and textual background of the texts studied.
Assessment Information
For grammar classes and similar students are expected to prepare certain exercises and assignments as 'homework'. For text-reading classes the workload consists of preparation of texts, and participation in classroom translation of texts and discussion of their form, content and context as appropriate.

The Degree Examination for Early Irish Texts 1 and Early Irish Texts 2 counts for 50% of the total marks available for each course, and the two class tests count for 25% each.
