Course description |
This module develops the student's comprehension of the real behaviour of materials and structures in more complex systems than simple frameworks. It achieves this through the medium of finite element analysis, introducing advanced topics to give the student the ability to analyse realistic systems with confidence. The student will develop and understand of many aspects of structural behaviour and its modelling. The course also demonstrates the power of finite element analysis to solve very challenging problems and positions the student well for a career in computational modelling in civil or structural engineering. |
Course Delivery Information
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe the meanings of the terms limit load, collapse, bifurcation buckling, and snap-through buckling load;
- describe the roles of eigenvalue and non-linear analysis of geometrically nonlinear structural systems;
- describe different theories of non-linear material behaviour used for different materials;
- use nonlinear finite element analysis to solve simple problems with nonlinear material behaviour;
- use nonlinear finite element analysis to solve simple problems with geometrically nonlinear behaviour including stability. |
Assessment Information
The assessment will be made on the basis of: Intermittent assessment 70%; Degree examination 30% |
