Course description |
This course allows students to gain experience and practice and knowledge of research methodology within the civil, structural, construction & environmental engineering research fields.
The course must be taken in conjunction with U03840: MEng Thesis 5 (Discipline of Civil & Environmental Engineering)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
This course will:
? provide an opportunity to work on a professionally challenging project;
? skill in organisation of an individual research programme;
? develop further report writing skills;
? develop skills in the organisation of an individual research programme;
? provide an understanding of research methods in civil, structural, construction and environmental engineering;
? encourage teamwork organisation and cooperation in developing and executing a work plan;
? experience the techniques available for the identification of relevant literature in the field of study;
? enhance skills in research dissemination via the Web.

Assessment Information
By continuous assessment, the components of which are:
? a web poster in semester 1 which will disseminate initial research findings and plans (25% - joint assessment by supervisor & second reader);
? an interim project submission at the end of semester 1 detailing the literature review as conducted so far (25%);
? a log book which records all progress on the project and is presented and discussed with supervisors at all meetings (25% - assessment by supervisor(s)); and
? an overall assessment of performance by the supervisor(s) (25%).
