Course description An introduction to Occitan as a literary language finding expression in lyric poetry, hagiography, epic and romance. The course will condiser the hybrid nature of the Occitan literary language and the various dialects contributing to it; it will consider the nature of the literary expressions developed in the different genres, and the interactions between the Occitan and Old French linguistic and cultural areas in the evolution of writing in both areas. The material will be approached through the close reading and analysis of exemplary texts. In addition to studying the formation and evolution of Occitan as a literary language the reasons for the fossilisation of the language and its loss as a living form of literary language in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries will be considered.
