Course description This option is designed to explore the development of the modern European novel from its impressive beginnings in the works of Marcel Proust and Thomas Mann to its characteristic manifestations in the writings of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Andre Gide, Andre Breton and Alfred Doblin. The course will be introduced by a reading of selected theoretical writings illuminating various aspects of the modern novel and its development. Discussion will then concentrate on four novels selected according to students' interest. The seminar will discuss characteristic motifs of the novels selected, the relevance of reflections on time and remembrance for the formation of the modern novel and the significance of new forms and techniques of narration, such as interior monologue, the 'tunnelling process', various forms of collage and a cinema-style of writing.
