Course description Thematic and aesthetic changes to filmmaking practices from the 1960s to the present reflect the growing fascination that surrounds the issues of memory - individual and collective, history and loss in contempory cultures. Focusing on the interplay between time and space in cinema, this seminar is designed to acquaint students with a series of key films, analysed in relation to the critical literature on the subject. The course will address issues relating to film and historicism, reflexivity in film, actual and virtual space, the cinematic city, exile and displacement, amongst others. Focusing on film practices that are distinct from conventional mainstream or Hollywood styles, the course will not be limited to European film, allowing for the comparative analysis of the work of European and non-European filmmakers.
