| Course description |
This course will provide an introduction to ancient love poetry through study of a selection of Greek and Roman poets in translation. Particular attention will be given to Early Greek Lyric, Hellenistic poetry, and the Roman poets Catullus, Vergil, Horace, Propertius and Ovid. These authors have been chosen for the different types of love poetry they exemplify and for their importance in shaping later European literature and art. |
Course Delivery Information
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate in tutorial discussion, in coursework and in the written degree examination that they have acquired the following academic competences:
? an informed understanding of ancient love poetry and its cultural context;
? skills of historical and literary analysis of classical texts;
? and an informed understanding and appreciation of a range of literary texts studied in English translation.
In addition, they should be able to demonstrate, again through tutorial discussion, coursework and the written degree examination, that they have acquired the following transferable skills:
? gathering material independently on a given topic and organising it into a coherent set of data;
? comparing differing sets of data and drawing conclusions from them;
? evaluating different approaches to and explanations of material, and making critical choices between them;
? expressing ideas and arguments clearly;
? and organising their own learning, managing their workload and working to a timetable.

Assessment Information
Coursework - 40%.
One (2-hour) examination - 60%. |
