Course description The module would seek to provide a balance of knowledge, understanding, theoretical frameworks and key managerial skills. The objectives of this module would be
(A) to provide an understanding of {i} the development of the services industry within the global economy, and {ii} the nature of services management and its relationship to management in other areas of the economy.
(B) To explore the conceptual framework of services management and consider whether it offers a discrete body of knowledge that legitimates it as a field of study in its own right.
(C) To examine the distinct challenges of services management and to consider the extent to which these are generic to services or sector/industry specific; to examine the specific challenges that they offer in emerging global markets (such as tourism and financial services)
(D) To provide students with the opportunity to consider the skills needed for services management and to offer them the opportunity to develop these through both group work and focused coursework (for example, by considering the challenges of services marketing compared to that in the manufacturing sector ? the key issue being where production and consumption are contemporaneous rather than separated).
These objectives would complement and test the material in the core modules of the existing programmes ? they would examine the extent to which industry and sector challenge the managerial task whilst offering an industry specific context in which to develop transferable employment skills. It is envisaged that this context would provide a fertile one for student dissertations. The module would build upon the insights of core modules, such a strategic management and marketing whilst challenging some of their precepts in a services context.
