In-depth consideration of the historic foundations of Christian ideas and practices to do with ?church? and ?ministry? by direct study of primary texts, especially key New Testament texts and other selected texts from the earliest centuries, and important scholarly studies of these matters. Seminar-mode, with assigned readings for each session. Key topics will include the nature and ethos of early churches, early worship ethos and practice, mission, leadership/ministry (including emergence of ordained ministry). |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
? Familiarity with details of key historic texts in the New Testament and other early Christian writings as to their relevance for questions about origins and nature of Church & Ministry
? Familiarity with key scholarly studies on these texts and the issues involved in the origins of Church & Ministry.
? Ability to discuss the texts, scholarly views, and issues addressed in the course on an informed basis.
? Ability to conduct supervised research on a relevant topic.
? Ability to develop and present in written form a coherent analysis of a relevant topic.

Assessment Information
? Weekly, written class-preparation forms reflecting engagement with assigned texts/readings, due each week in class: 25% of course mark
? Essay (ca. 5K words) on a relevant topic, demonstrating research, analysis, organization of thought, good writing ability, proper essay & reference format: 75% of course mark. |
