Course description |
Exploration Seismology A consists of 5 topics: land and marine 3D seismic reflection data acquisition; seismic sources; creation of seismic sections and 3D seismic volumes; the impulse and impulse response; dip moveout and seismic migration.
The 2nd part of the course is Methods of Interpretation. Topics covered include seismic refraction interpretation; velocity determination, structural interpretation and time-to-depth converstion of seismic reflection data; structural interpretation exercise; and petrophysical properties from borehole seismic data interpretation. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, you will have an appreciation of how research develops from seismic exploration data acquisition to geological interpretation for refractions, reflections and borehole seismic data. You will have an integrated knowledge (which is detailed in places) of:
1. Land and marine 3D seismic reflection data acquisition
2. Seismic sources
3. Creation of seismic sections and 3D seismic volumes
4. The impulse and impulse response
5. Dip moveout and seismic migration
This course also takes you to state-of-the art research level in two topics of active current interest in Exploration Seismology and you will critically review relevant literature as a class exercise. You will learn how understanding in Exploration Seismology is advanced and how surveys are designed, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. You will learn some transferable skills which can be used in both a professional level context and when conducting research e.g. methods of interpretation. |
