Course description Informed by contemporary professional, academic and research literature, this course will help students develop a detailed understanding of the role preschool and primary school physical education plays as the foundation for engagement in lifelong and lifewide physical activity. It will also explore how preschool and primary school physical education contributes to children=s broader learning in education. The course will contextualise current physical education thinking within an ecological framework and will focus on developing students= knowledge and understanding of the preschool and primary school physical education curriculum aligned with developmentally appropriate pedagogy skills and practice.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Articulate a detailed knowledge and understanding of contemporary socio-cultural and national discourses influencing developments in preschool and primary school physical education

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key principles underpinning lifelong learning in physical education, with particular reference to the role of the pre-school and primary years.

Display a detailed understanding of contemporary developments within preschool and primary physical education curriculum and pedagogy.

Apply contemporary theories of child development, learning and teaching in physical education through the planning, delivery and evaluation of developmentally appropriate preschool and primary physical education learning experiences, including play.

Work collaboratively within the preschool and primary school context

Undertake reflective study which integrates theory, research and practice in preschool and primary physical education
Assessment Information
Students will be assessed on the University-based and School Experience element of the course.

University-based Assignment (50% of total grade for course): A 1,500 word assignment integrating the theory and research which informs students= understanding of the 3-11 physical education curriculum and pedagogy

School Placement Experience Assignment (50% of total grade for course): A 1,500 word evaluative report based on their school placement experiences from which students will identify key development needs for their Personal Professional Learning Portfolio.
