Course description |
In a society in which social inequality is a structured and structural reality, the notion of "inclusion" is often reduced to a technique rather than a social aspiration. This course begins from the recognition that policy, particularly in education, perpetuates and reinforces unequal social relation. To recognise community education as "exclusive" shifts practice from a concentration on accommodating "deficit" individuals into the mainstream, to one which seeks to modify the mainstream to create a more inclusive reality. The course aims to create an argument which relates the position of disabled people in society to broader political and social processes and to consider ways educators can foster a "genuinely open culture". |
