Course description |
This course will consider various aspects of the relationship between home, school and community and the implications for children, parents and teachers. Topics will include communication skills, meetings with parents, writing reports, homework policy and practice, school newsletters, the nature of families and communities, PTAs, school boards and the development of policies and strategies to encourage a collaborative approach to supporting children's learning. The course is both practical and theoretical. Guest participants will include people researching home-school issues, practitioners who are developing parental involvement programmes and parents. Case studies, simulations, and discussions with guest participants will provide an opportunity to consider a variety of home-school issues based on academic analysis and professional judgement. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To develop: - an understanding of the complexity of the interaction between parents, schools and communities - an ability to critically analyse policy and practice in home school partnership - an ability to reflect on ones own value system - a practical and theoretical understanding of home/school interaction, including parents' evenings, reporting 5-14, homework policy and practice, PTAs and School Boards.

Assessment Information
A 4000 word essay.
Assessment criteria
1.Relevance: how well does the essay respond to the question set? Does it present a critical justification of the selected area?
2.A questioning approach: to what extent does the essay adopt a questioning approach, e.g. by identifying problems and issues, and weighing the strength of different arguments and ideas?
3.Use of evidence: to what extent does the essay support the points it makes with evidence, drawing on relevant reading beyond the core course materials? Does it include an effective critical review of the literature on the chosen topic?
4.Coherence: how well does the essay hang together as a coherent whole, with essay material well organised and following a clear structure? |
