Course description This course is intended to offer students the opportunity to engage in an intensive study of the relationship between research and professional practice. From Year One of the programme students will have been encouraged to develop a research disposition and will have engaged in various small-scale research activities. This course gives students the opportunity to extend their research capabilities by means of lectures and workshops with expert professionals. Students will also plan, implement and evaluate a piece of research, under the supervision of a member of School staff. This consolidation and development of their experiences aims to support students complete the transition from being research consumers to becoming research providers

Course Delivery Information
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course students will be able to:
- Apply research to policy and practice by becoming a practitioner researcher.
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of a range of approaches to research and of the need to select an approach appropriate to the aims of a given study.
- Develop an awareness of the importance of educational and childhood research in the development of reflective practice.
- Analyse and discuss the theoretical basis and implications for policy and practice of a number of recent and relevant research studies.
- Plan, implement and present the outcomes of an empirical research study carried out in a Childhood context.
Assessment Information
1. Research proposal (500 words) for the professional project semester 1(formative).
2. Professional Project (8000 words) to be submitted as a dissertation semester 2 (summative assessment).
