Course description This course focuses on the organisational development and management roles of professionals who work with children in a variety of statutory and voluntary sector settings. Participants will consider what is involved in building and developing organisations and being responsible for their own and others' work. The emphasis is on applied knowledge and understanding in areas such as organisational structure, developing participative organisations, supervision, teamwork, planning and development, finance and funding, evaluation and accountability. The skills and activities of management are considered with reference to the current policy context and in relation to differing interpretations of the management function.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course participants will be able to:

- Identify a range of approaches to building new organisations.
- Elaborate a coherent approach to staff development in professional settings.
- Explain the nature of power and authority in organisations.
- Analyse mechanisms and identify appropriate methods for participative decision-making in organisations.
- Apply theories of managing change to practice settings.
- Identify the problematic relationship between policy-making and management in a professional setting.
- Describe examples of the assessment and evaluation of programmes and projects.
- Identify issues related to organisational autonomy and worker withdrawl.
Assessment Information
Participants will examine management practice in relation a professional setting of their choice. A 3-4,000 word paper outlining the findings and analysis will provide the basis for assessment.
