Course description The course will introduce participants to the field of Cultural Studies as a context for constructing understanding key themes within culture, heritage and diversity and demonstrate how Music is a significant contributor to shaping and influencing culture.Cultural Studies is a multli-disciplinary field, here fusing the study of culture, ethnomusicology and education. The fusion of theoretical and practical knowledge through the course will be applied systematically to a rigorous consdieration of contemporary issues in curriculum and pedagogy relating to primary school stages.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Engage critically with the main themes within the academic domain of cultural studies;
Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and practical skill of a selected range of western and non-western musics;
reflect, critically, on their own experiences of engaging with the specialist area of Music Education and the extent to which performance experiences have been informed by their theoretical understanding of the themes and sub-themes of the course;
Analyse and evaluate the ways in which cultural studies and musial experiences will inform their planning, presentation and evaluation of the teaching of musical activities in the primary curriculum.
Assessment Information
Total 4000 words or equivalent.

An oral presentation (3000 word equiv: 75% weighting)
Maintainance of a professional portfolio (1000 word equiv: 25% weighting)
