| Course description |
There has been a rapid increase in the use of new technologies to support educational activity both within the classroom and outwith the traditional school environment.
This half course is introduced as a means of allowing student teachers to explore and reflect on the use and inclusion of novel, new and emerging technologies which support learning and teaching in Design and Technology Education. By its nature, technology adopts materials, resources, ideas and concepts which often prove challenging when realising their opportunities in school environments. This course seeks to investigate the ways new technologies can be employed to stimulate, enhance and motivate young learners in Design and Technology. It also aims to develop discernment in application and inclusion of educational technologies in teaching and for learning. It is important that selection and use is informed by critical understanding and not driven by novelty.
The pace at which technologies are advancing is ever increasing and future educators should be enabled to harness the most useful and positive aspects in order to support innovative, collaborative and engaging classroom practice and provide compelling and meaningful educational opportunities. This course provides opportunities for students to engage in curriculum research and development and may also appeal to practitioners who wish to integrate emerging technologies within their curriculum planning and pedagogical strategies.
The course offers opportunities to develop some of the themes explored in all preceding education courses, Education1A, 1b, 2 and 3. Educational Technologies and ICT used well can have profound affect on learning, particularly for those with additional learning support needs and thus aid the teacher in addressing aspects of teachability agenda, reasonable adjustment and differentiation. There will be opportunities for themes of learner voice, individual needs, sensory impairment , social justice, interdisciplinary learning, literacy and numeracy, individual learning planning, behaviour support and assessment will be explored through this course drawing on the theories and constructs from Education course.
By the very nature of this course, its subject content will evolve and change. It will also track new and existing technologies as they mature. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Undertake research in digital and educational technologies
2. Justify inclusion of digital and educational technologies from an informed stance related to principles, knowledge, and skills for Technology Education futures.
3. Provide historical and theoretical perspectives on the development of digital technologies and on their contribution to education.
4. Demonstrate an informed understanding of contemporary and emerging technologies and their current and potential application within the field of education
5. Design and produce resources for learning and teaching which integrate and exploit innovative practices in learning and teaching addressing specific identified aspects e.g. those drawn from previous school experience and Education course themes.
6. Showcase innovative practices in learning and teaching for peer and practitioner feedback. |
Assessment Information
Summative 1: A scholarly research report (1,500 words) of the development of digital technologies in education. 35%
Summative 2: a substantial project comprising of learning and teaching resources in digital format. This will include a well informed rationale which argues for the enhancement offered by the resources to learning and teaching and the specific needs to be addressed. 65% |
