| Course description |
Students will be encouraged to draw on assigned reading for the course and prior learning in the core courses Language Learning and Teaching and Language Description for Language Teaching. The following will be studied and students will be asked to reflect on examples from their own language teaching and learning contexts:
- the genesis and development of LSP: an introduction to the history of LSP, characteristic contexts, critical theory and key issues;
- processes in LSP: context analysis, genre and discourse analysis, LSP course design, materials evaluation and design, assessment, and appropriate methodologies;
- current research findings and LSP research directions;
- learning and teaching: language for specific discourse communities eg language for academic purposes, language for business, language for medical purposes, language for law, language for science and technology.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will:
- be aware of the genesis and development of LSP
- be able to identify central issues for the teaching of LSP
- demonstrate a critical awareness of the relevance of theoretical insights in LSP educational contexts
- have explored the relationship between LSP theory and classroom practice through case studies and examples from their own teaching contexts
- be familiar with key processes in LSP (eg context analysis, genre and discourse analysis, course design, materials design and evaluation, assessment, appropriate methodologies including the role of different forms of course delivery)
- be aware of current LSP research issues and possible directions for future research
- have outlined a design for a short LSP course or component of a larger LSP programme demonstrating appropriate design procedures and critical consideration of relevant theoretical issues or research findings
- have designed and critically evaluated samples of original materials for use in a defined LSP context. |
Assessment Information
| A 5000 word project from one of three options with reference to a specified LSP context. Students are required to demonstrate critical reflection on relevant current and key research, and theory. They should use logical and coherent reasoning supported by reading and acknowledged by appropriate citation and referencing. |
