This unit will provide students with the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the major discourses that have influenced how different theoretical frameworks of Physical Education and Youth Sport have been constructed. These different frameworks will be referenced against the current values and practices that inform curriculum and programme planning in Physical Education and Youth Sport. Research into the values that inform current practices will then be critically reviewed with regard to how Physical Education and Youth Sport programmes might be framed and influenced in future years |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On satisfactory completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Critically examine the major discourses that have influenced Physical Education and Youth Sport
2. Examine the imperatives and protocols that have informed curriculum theory and programme modelling in Physical Education and Youth Sport;
3. Analyse the changing aims, perspectives and influences upon Physical Education curricula in schools from 1975-2000;
4. Evaluate the origin and impact of recent curriculum and programme initiatives in Physical Education and Youth Sport;
5. Critically analyse the major factors influencing contemporary public policy on young people's Physical Education and sport;
6. Critically appraise the relationship between Physical Education & Youth Sport and consider how this will influence curriculum and programme development in the future. |
Assessment Information
| Each student will be required to produce an assignment of 4000 words. The assignment question will require students to critique the major discourses influencing PEYS and to critically evaluate their impact upon current values and practices. From this analysis, students will come to conclusions as to the future framing of PEYS. |
