Course description |
This course aims to examine, from a philosophical viewpoint, a range of conceptual and practical issues concerning the nature and purposes of schooling, the content of the curriculum and the role of the teacher. The course begins by exploring the general impact on contemporary educational issues and problems of the ideas of Plato, Rousseau and Dewey, proceeding to explore the influence of past and present philosophers on a range of more particular contemporary issues of educational theory, policy and practice. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
LO1. Appreciate the significant contemporary educational impact of the ideas of Plato, Rousseau and Dewey.
LO2. Understand some of the key past and present philosophical ideas that have shaped contemporary conceptions of teaching and the role of the teacher.
LO3. Understand some of the key past and present philosophical ideas that have shaped contemporary conceptions of the educational value of knowledge and its place in the school curriculum
LO4. Understand some of the key past and present philosophical ideas that have shaped contemporary conceptions of the bearing of social theory and principles on education.
LO6. Have understood something of the nature of philosophical methodology and different approaches to philosophical analysis
LO7. have acquired a capacity for critical analysis of conceptual problems concerning education and teaching.
