Course description The course offers students an opportunity to reflect in more depth on the theoretical underpinning of the learning and teaching undertaken in schools during PGDE study . It also encourages students to develop a foundation for future Masters level study and M-level engagement with theory which can help their future professional development.
Students access research methodology classes, through e-learning and timetabled classes during the PGDE year to enable them to conduct an action research project based upon their planning and teaching of an interdisciplinary unit of learning on their final placement.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of theoretical underpinnings of models of interdisciplinary learning

Generic Cognitive Skills
Critically , conceptualise, analyse and synthesise complex professional level issues relating to the inter-dependence of curriculum , teaching, learning and assessment.
Critically review recent literature that informed their consideration of issues related to planning, teaching, assessing and evaluating interdisciplinary learning. This literature review should draw upon readings from policy documents, research and practice based literature.
Collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative data related to pupil learning during their final placement.
Use data analysis to evaluate critically the impact of their teaching of an interdisciplinary unit on the learning and learners in their placement class.
Critically reflect on the teaching approaches they originally adopted in the light of the evaluation of impact data and the review of literature.
Re-evaluate the planned unit of working the light of this extended reflection.
Create an explicit and appropriately theoretically-informed rationale for interdisciplinary learning that will inform future teaching.

Communication, ICT and Numeracy Skills
demonstrate skills in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
demonstrate skills in written communication consistent with SQF level 11 work
Autonomy , Accountability and Working with Others
Interpret complex ethical and professional issues in accordance with current professional codes of practice

Assessment Information
Oral presentation and Assignment
Students must achieve a pass in an oral presentation assessed using SQF level 10 criteria as detailed in course handbook.
100% of the grade for the assignment comes from the written assignment.
Assessment criteria
 Critically evaluate literature on interdisciplinary learning from a wide variety of sources
 Present a reflective rationale on interdisciplinary learning to inform future teaching
 Meet the academic standards for presentation of SQF Level 11 written assignments in terms of technical skills, structure and presentation
