Course description This course aims to give the student knowledge of a representative sample of twentieth-century women's writing from Latin America, based mainly around the novel but also incorporating some poetry and short stories. In limiting the course material by gender, the focus will be on giving the student insight into, and understanding of, key cultural and theoretical issues regarding the woman writer, such as ghettoisation and l'ecriture feminine.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students should:
a) improve their skills in reading, analysing and interpreting literature in Spanish and gain the necessary skills to discuss issues relating specifically to women's writing in a theoretically sophisticated and informed manner;
b) be able to contrast different ways in which Latin American women writers have addressed questions of gender and writing and be able to offer from their readings of the prescribed texts observations about the appropriateness of various feminist models and theories in the diverse Latin American context;
c) be able to present the above in written and oral form, with reference to a broad range of secondary sources.
Assessment Information
Formative assessment - one presentation and one essay. Formal summative assessment - one exam (3 hours).
