Course description |
This course is designed to increase participants' ability to plan, undertake and report small-scale academic research in written and spoken form. The main course components are: Critical reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; Presentation skills; and work on two Projects (one collaborative and the other individual). |

There is one set book for the course: "Study Speaking" by Anderson, Maclean and Lynch ISBN 9780521 533966. It costs around £15.00 and it is not necessary to buy the accompanying audio CD. |
Information for Visiting Students
Pre-requisites |
Overall 6.5 IELTS with a minimum of 6.0 in each section (or TOEFL equivalents). Students who have not taken IELTS or TOEFL will be asked to take an entry test on Wednesday 12 January 2011 (2 pm) at IALS/OLL, 21 Hill Place, to see whether they have reached the required level for the course. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have completed two cycles of research, involving
- selection and scoping of a feasible research topic
- location and critical reading of relevant sources
- selection of material for citation
- first draft of the written text
- response to feedback on the draft
- revision, editing and proofreading
- bibliographic presentation
- presentation of the final text
- communication of the findings in oral form |
Assessment Information
An individual project (1,750 - 2,000 words) on a topic related to English language learning.
A 10-minute presentation on the individual project. |
