| Course description |
The course begins by examining Brecht's theories and practice in the theatre and goes on to trace his possible subsequent influence, theoretic and stylistic, on the British stage since the fifties, assessing what forms and tactics contribute most to 'political theatre' and discussing various forms of political theatre and their effectiveness. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| Students should acquire a knowledge of Brecht's drama, and his theories and practice in the theatre, along with an understanding of the extent to which these influenced subsequent theatrical writing and practice in Britain. They should also develop a broad understanding of the nature, tactics and effectiveness of political theatre in the C20th. |
Assessment Information
| 1 essay of 2,500 words (25%); 1 take-away examination essay of 3,000 words (75%) |
Special Arrangements
| Numbers are limited to 15, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot. |
