| Course description |
This course, using fiction and non-fiction texts, considers themes of gender, class and empire (including Scotland and England in relation to each other), as well as looking at questions of social position of women in Victorian society in Victorian women's writing and the intersections between fiction and non-fiction. It considers women as literary critics: articles eg. Geraldine Jewsbury, Mulock Craik, Oliphant; women as fiction writers, Charlotte Bronte, Eliot, Gaskell, Jewsbury, Mulock Craik, Oliphant; the woman question or women's issues: Besant, Martineau, Nightingale, Norton, Oliphant. It also considers women's writing unpublished at the time, eg. letters: Helen Mackenzie, Jane Welsh Carlyle, and autobiography (published and unpublished): Annie Besant, Ellen Johnston, Margaret Oliphant, Christian Watt. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The intended learning outcomes of this course include knowledge of the Victorian period, with specific concentration of women's writing in this period. The student will be able to discuss topics related to the course one to one, in small groups and in the larger seminar.
They will also be able to produce short summaries of discussions and longer papers, exploring theoretically and analytically, on texts and topics relating to the course.
They will have reasonable computer skills and familiarity with finding and sourcing information in libraries, printed texts and on the web. |
