Course description |
This course is an introduction to the history of the Islamic world from 500 to 1050 CE. It covers the pre-Islamic background to Islam, the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the Arab conquests, the formation of the first Muslim world empire (the Caliphate), the development of religio-political sectarian division (notably Sunni and Shi'i Islam) and the fragmentation of the Caliphate into a commonwealth of successor states. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1) Basic understanding of Middle Eastern history 500-1050.
2) Enhanced ability to pose meaningful historical questions and to evaluate them critically.
3) Improved skills in research and written and oral presentation. |
Assessment Information
Examination: one 2-hour exam (55%)
Coursework: one essay of 2000 words (30%)
one mid-semester test (10%)
seminar participation (5%)
