Course description This course gives an introduction to the main branches and traditions of religious thought and manifestations of religious culture, which developed over the centuries following the rise of Islam up to the modern period. These include religious law, theology, philosophy, Sufism and political thought. The course will explore central themes in these fields, but will also focus on some narrower topics of interest, which may be relevant to the contemporary situation.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to:
1. understand some of the key discussions and themes in the main branches and traditions of Islamic thought,
2. grasp classical and modern perspectives on important themes and practices,
3. understand something of the diversity of Islamic views and practices.
Assessment Information
Examinations: one 2-hour exam (60%)
Coursework:
one essay of 2,000 words and seminar contribution (30%)
one mid-semester test (10%)
