Course description |
The course is a core subject-specific preparation for students who wish to carry out research on the Arabic-speaking world. It will explore some of the tensions between area studies and the disciplines and introduce key paradigms and approaches to the study of the region, with the aim of helping students develop their own research frameworks. Sessions will include presentations from CASAW and affiliated academic staff as well as student-led discussions on pre-assigned readings.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
a)Critically evaluate the key theoretical debates surrounding research in the Arabic-speaking world.
b)Display advanced awareness of the relationship between different disciplinary approaches to the Arabic-speaking world.
c)Display practical familiarity with the implications of a range of research methods in the context of research on the Arabic-speaking world.
d)Formulate a theoretically informed plan for research on the Arabic-speaking world.
e)Display an advanced understanding of the political dimensions of research in the Arabic-speaking world.
