Course description |
This course aims to bring knowledge of language, in various aspects, to the teaching of textual analysis and related topics in the classroom. The following topics will be covered:-
- Grammar in textual analysis
- Style in the textual analysis of prose
- Poetic form in textual analysis
- Textual analysis, language variation and language change
- Scots language in Scottish texts

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course specifically aims to:-
! equip practising and future teachers of English with useful techniques of linguistic analysis;
! demonstrate possible applications of linguistic analysis and linguistic knowledge to selected literary and non-literary texts;
! provide classroom-relevant knowledge about variation and change in English;
! raise awareness of relevant printed and electronic resources.

Assessment Information
Completion of an assessment relating to all five units equivalent to an overall essay wordage of 4000. |
