| Course description |
The course covers both theories of pragmatics and phenomena in linguistics that have attracted explaination in terms of such theories. Classes and assessments will include analysis of naturally occuring data, as well as evaluaton of various analytical frameworks. Domains covered include Gricean theory, Relevance theory and Politeness theory, as well as various linguistic phenomena, often of a 'discourse-oriented' kind. |

| Pre-requisites |
Visiting students should have at least 3 Linguistics/Language Sciences courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and discuss important concepts in pragmatics
- Analyse spoken data for both structure and function
- Evaluate different kinds of explanation in the field of pragmatics

Assessment Information
1) Assignment related to readings from first half of course(30%) c1000-1500 words
2) a longer essay or project (70%) c2500-3000 words
