Course for final year students in Honours programmes in Mathematics.
1. Group actions
2. Representations of groups and FG-modules; notions of submodules, homomorphisms, irreducibility
3. Complete reducibilty; Schur's lemma
4. Characters, character tables and orthogonality relations
5. Induction, restriction, Frobenius reciprocity, Mackey's theorem
6. Burnside's theorem |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| To gain a working knowledge of basic techniques in representation theory and to be able to apply this knowledge in elementary examples; in particular, to gain working knowledge of basic techniques in the theory of characters, character tables and orthogonality relations and to be able to apply this knowledge in elementary examples. |
