Course description |
Course for final year students in Honours programmes in Mathematics.
1. Construction of dynamical models
2. Introduction/review of classical mechanics
3. Numerical methods for ODEs - elementary stability/accuracy/ convergence of 1-step methods
4. Geometric integrators (eg. symplectic/volume-preserving/time-reversible methods)
5. Backward error analysis

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. gain an understanding of dynamical modelling principles, including geometric integration
2. gain familiarity with numerical analysis techniques for ordinary differential equations, including concepts like accuracy and stability
3. explore various applications of dynamical simulation, including molecular dynamics and physically based modelling
4. learn to use the software package Matlab to implement and visualise results from a dynamical simulation |

30% Coursework and 70% Examination
