Course description This course covers several fundamental topics in algebra, providing a solid and broad foundation across the spectrum of the subject. There will be many extended examples of the interplay of algebra with other fields of mathematics, including number theory, geometry, and Lie theory.

The course is divided into three parts: group theory; rings and modules; ordinary representation theory of finite groups. The first two parts are self-contained, involving theory from the canon of nineteenth and twentieth century algebra, whilst the third part builds on these, highlighting more modern developments.
