Course description 'Process of Care - Gastrointestinal System & Oncology' is one of the four courses covering all of the systems of the body. These integrated courses will bring together basic scientists and practicing clinicians to teach about the presentation, diagnosis and management of the diseases affecting the different body system. The course will build on learning from courses in digestion, nutrition and disease mechanism in the early years. One group of students per week will be attached to the Oncology Unit at the Western General Hospital to learn general principles of cancer care. Most of the teaching will take place within teaching hospitals although there will be some element from general practice.

Additional information The course lasts for seven weeks and consists of core lectures, clinico-pathological conferences, tutorials, clinical ward based teaching (including a week in an Oncology Unit) and self-directed learning.
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
There are learning objectives covering attitudes, skills and knowledge. Students must be able respond appropriately, professionally and confidentially with patients and their families and integrate with the clinical team involved in the patient's care. They must be able to demonstrate competence in skills such as history taking, eliciting a patient's understanding of their illness and clinical examination. A broad knowledge base should include being able to describe or discuss relevant anatomical structures, physiology and biochemistry, recognise presenting signs and symptoms, make a differential diagnosis understand the commonly used pharmacological agents for tearing gastrointestinal disease.
Assessment Information
MCQ examination (70%),in course assessment of clinical skills (20%) and in course assessment of Personal and Professional Development (10%) held at the end of the 7 week rotation.

There are three components to the overall assessment for the year - an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), the in-course assessment as above, and portfolio case reports. All three components must be passed each with a minimum mark of 60%.
