Course description This is a key vertical element that deals with many of the central vocational aspects of medical training. It is based principally on the acquisition of skills, competencies, attributes and attitudes, which will equip the graduate to function effectively as a doctor (Pre-Registration House Officer). It is complementary to the process of attaining high levels of knowledge, and is designed to integrate with other types of learning. There is extensive interaction and integration between the eight themes, including a unified assessment framework. Consultation Skills and Communication Skills will form an integral part of every course in Year 5.

Additional information Teaching and learning will take place in central and peripheral hospitals, with an attachment in General Practice.
Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes act as a definition of the core curriculum, provide "signposts" to direct students in their learning, and provide a clear and rational basis for assessment.
Assessment Information
The 3 components ofassessment are:
Portfolio Viva - The portfolio viva may cover any of the portfolio vertical themes including the CSPPD themes, Consultation skills, Medical Ethics, Legal and Professional Responsibilities, and Personal Development.
Safety in Practice exam - Within this written examination important aspects of knowledge and reasoning skills needed for medical practice will be tested.
Clinical Practice Exam - The clinical examination at the end of the year will assess Communication and Consultation skills. It may also assess ability to perform practice-related tasks such as those in the Practical Clinical Skills and Procedures theme, and First Aid and Resuscitation.
