Course description |
This course is designed to develop further the contrapuntal skills acquired in previous years, and to foster a deeper understanding of the processes in reconciling the horizontal (counterpoint) and the vertical (harmony). |

Pre-requisites |
Visiting students should have at least three Music courses at grade B or above in Music Theory (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- To learn how to write vocal counterpoint in 16th-century styles, mainly those of Palestrina and Byrd, either by completing the lower voices of an extract (top voice given) or by completing a given opening.
- To study 18th-century fugal styles, especially those of J.S. Bach, and to write fugues in related styles.
- To study fugal techniques found in trios, three-part inventions and other repertoire from Corelli to Mozart. |
Assessment Information
Two coursework exercises (35% each) and one 3-hour examination (30%). |
