Course description This course addresses loss at one particular time. As well as many grief and loss-related issues which are relevant to nurses and nursing, it raises many issues pertaining to human relationships throughout the life cycle. It also looks more closely at the experience of the carer.

Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Nursing 1 (NUST08001) AND Nursing 2 (NUST08006) AND Health and Society 1A (NUST08002) AND Health and Society 1B (NUST08003) AND Health and Society 2A (NUST08004) AND Health and Society 2B (NUST08005)

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The student will understand the theory underpinning the current understanding of grief and loss. The student will be able to demonstrate the application of the theory to practice. The student will be able to explain the potential for the serious impact of the death of a client/patient on the formal carer. The student will know the means by which this impact may be reduced.
Assessment Information
Two course papers. One of 2000 words critically analysing a published account of an experience of loss. Counts for 30%.

The other paper is of 3500 to 4000 words addressing one chosen area of loss in childbearing. Counts for 70%.
