Course description |
Evidence and information are key to change: firstly to demonstrate that the current service is sub-optimal in some way; secondly in considering options for change and their practical implications (staffing, client through-put, facilities and equipment, client and staff views); secondly in monitoring and managing the implementation of the service change decided; and finally in demonstrating the outcome of the service change. A further key use of information is to increase organisational learning and knowledge by disseminating not just the outcomes of the service change but also the challenges met and addressed. This module will provide an introduction to the different methodologies, which can be employed in generating knowledge. |

First degree or equivalent vocational qualifications. Some previous understanding of the use of knowledge in services, and limited experience of research methods would be of use. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course the students should be able to:
! Critically understand the key role of information
in service development
! Understand how information can be used at various
stages of service development and methods for
collecting, analysing and applying information
! Appraise the different types of information that
are used in service development
! Appreciate the importance of scientific rigour in
collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting
of information
! Understand the ways in which information can be
reported and disseminated so as to maximise
accessibility and organisational learning
! Identify what information might be appropriately
employed in a particular service development
context
! Design data forms, questionnaires and interview
guides for the collection of information
! Analyse and report qualitative and quantitative
information for diverse purposes and audiences

Assessment Information
An essay of 4000 words. Students present a service improvement project from their workplace and critically assess the appropriate information used, in terms of its epistemological and practical value, practical and methodological issues in collection and interpretation. |
