Course description The course consists of parts of the MSc in Informatics degree programme and covers principles of computational biology together with the range and impact of Bioinformatics tools used in biological sciences. The syllabus includes: biological databases; pairwise sequence alignment; sequence databases and multiple alignment profiles; gene finding, genomics and proteomics; and functional genomics. Lectures are supplemented by on-line exercises and tutorials and in-course assignments.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student will have:
(i) A solid grounding in the basic principles of computational biology
(ii) An appreciation of the range and impact of Bioinformatics tools currently used in the biological sciences.
(iii) Have produced written reports identifying and applying appropriate tools to investigate questions in genetics.
