| Course description |
The monuments studied in this course are those erected by the Emperors or at the behest of the Roman State (Senate and People) either in Rome itself or in the provinces in the period between the end of the Republic and the reign of Constantine the Great. They include ostensibly religious monuments such as the Ara Pacis, triumphal and other arches, and columns, and the sculpture used to decorate them. Their iconography is studied in detail in the light of the history of the periods when they were produced and the policies of the emperors at the time. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- Recognise and describe the key state monuments of the Roman world.
- Describe and analyse the architecture, iconography, technique and style of these monuments.
- Discuss the iconography in relation to both the polcies of the day and the target audiences. |
