Course description |
The course provides postgraduate students with a close study of the Greek hymnic genre from the archaic to the late Hellenistic period. Study will include both literary and cult hymns from a broad geographical and chronological span. Emphasis will be on identifying characteristic features of the genre, understanding the developments and innovation in the use of these features and problems of interpretation. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, students will have gained a thorough and extensive knowledge of the Greek hymnic genre, of its development over a period of approx. 1000 years, and of the current state of scholarship on the genre.
Students will refine analytical skills, their ability to understand and interpret what they read, and craft and express an argument in written form and oral form through oral presentations, discussions, and a research paper.
