Course description |
This course examines central features of the anthropology of the Middle East and the 'Islamic periphery'. It is oriented towards a study of Islam in social practice. First, it will consider the notion of the 'Middle East' and how it might be identified. Second, it will look at specific ethnographies which will be analysed in relation to wider theoretical debates in anthropology. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the ethnographic particularities of the region as well as a critical understanding of the ways in which such particularities can be linked to wider anthropological concerns and debates. They will also gain an appreciation of the various social and historical factors which have contributed to the 'problems' associated with the contemporary situation in the Arab world. |
