Course description This course will explore complementary and contrasting conceptualisations of 'childhood', developed historically and co-currently, in a range of academic disciplines. The exploration will be grounded in practice and policy examples, to illuminate their assumptions and potential impact.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course and independent study, students should:
- Know and be able to provide a critical evaluation a range of conceptual frameworks of 'childhood', 'child development' and 'children's rights', across academic disciplines
- Know and be able to discuss critically the key principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
- Have experience in evaluating particular areas of legislation, policy and practice that affect children
- Have participated in group discussions and been involved in active group learning
- Gained experience in accessing and critically analysing policy documents and reports, including web resources
