Course description |
This course aims to provide an introduction to human CNS diseases with a particular emphasis on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The students will gain an understanding of the causes of CNS disease, basic mechanisms underlying disease processes, and how they are manifested. They will also appreciate the development of model systems to mimic aspects of disease, how these have contributed to the understanding of disease processes and aided the development of treatment strategies. There will be emphasis on pharmacological approaches contrasted with novel treatment strategies such as the use of stem cells in the treatment of CNS disease.
Topics:
- The nature and aetiology of CNS diseases (such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease)
- Molecular Pathology
- Cellular mechanisms of brain injury (excitotoxicity, inflammation, programmed cell death)
- Model systems
- Treatment strategies (pharmacological approaches, gene and stem cell therapy)
Methods of teaching:
There will be a series of lectures (2hr/week) relating to the topics studied and this will be supplemented by tutorials and self-learning in the library. Students will give presentations in the form of talks and poster presentations and will prepare handouts to accompany their presentations. There will be no practical work on this course. |
