Course description |
The course deals with recent discoveries and methods of research and focuses on firstly lipid substances that include essential fatty acids (EFA) and substances derived from them biochemically, including cannabinoids and vanilloids. The roles of these substances in the immune system, mediation of pain perception and several other roles are considered. The importance of EFA lipids in the diet and in pathophysiology of various diseases are discussed and include the concept of oxidative stress contributing to disease Only a selected number of areas can be covered in the time available and these will include:
i. Importance of EFAs
ii. Products derived from EFAs.
iii. Non-enzymic conversion of EFAs to biologically active mediators as a marker of oxidative stress
iv. Phytocannabinoids and Endocannabinoids
v. Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptors
vi. Use of gene deletion in defining roles of 'orphan receptors'.
The course will consist of introductory lectures and a number of discussion groups. |
