Course description |
This 20 credit course aims to raise interest in, and awareness of, Scottish philosophy from its earliest beginnings to the twentieth century. Students will be introduced to the key metaphysical, epistemological and ethical theories promulgated by Scottish thinkers since the late medieval period, through guided close reading of relevant extracts.
PLEASE NOTE: This course is offered by the Office of Lifelong Learning as part of its programme of Continuing Education. The nature of delivery, and the composition of its student cohort, may differ from courses delivered solely for undergraduate students. Teaching for this course is scheduled for the evening and is spread over semesters 1 and 2. The assessments schedule for this course is as follows: coursework essays are due 5 January and 6 April, and a classroom assessment takes place in the week beginning 22 March. The re-sit date for the classroom assessment is 24 May. OLL's academic regulations will apply to this course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
? Identify the key themes in Scottish philosophical thought;
? Locate these themes to their historical context;
? Relate these themes to the broader intellectual climate of Scotland and Europe over the period studied;
? Explain some of the key texts and philosophers from the history of Scottish philosophy; and
? Subject these to critical scrutiny. |
Assessment Information
This course will be assessed by three components:
1. Seen assessment 1 (2000 word essay) to be submitted during the course -weighted at 25%.
2. Seen assessment 2 (2000 word essay) to be submitted after the conclusion of the course - weighted at 50%.
3. Unseen classroom assessment (two timed essays from a selection of six questions, 1.5 hour paper) - weighted at 25%.
Provisional marks for all assessments are released after internal moderation and approved by the Final Assessment Board which meets in the first week of August
To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 40% in the combined mark (and a minimum of 30% in each assessment component)
