Course description This course focuses on the development of language and cognitive skills, exploring the extent to which they are inter-related and reviewing what can be learned about the path of normal development from linguistic tests. It goes on to explore how such tests can be used to explore cognitive functioning in children with neurodevelopmental pathologies and finally considers specific problems in language development.

Pre-requisites Visiting students should have at least 3 Psychology courses at grade B or above (or be predicted to obtain this). We will only consider University/College level courses.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Outcomes:
- To enhance awareness of the complexities of the language/thought relationship in human evolution and development.
- To be familiar with some of the main theoretical positions regarding the relationship between language and cognition.
- To know how evidence from non-humans has affected the language/thought debate.
- To understand how tests of reasoning in children relate to the language/thought debate.
- To understand the development of symbolic thought and the relationship between language and symbolic representation.
- To gain knowledge of how children decode pictorial representations, with respect to inferring intentions and naming
- To understand how language normally develops in children and at least 3 ways in which the language and communication system fails to develop normally.
